Please reach us at adoptions@adoptapitrescue.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Adoption fees vary by dog. You can find the adoption fees listed under each dog's adoption profile.
We rely on adoption fees and donations to support our rescue. Puppies typically require more vetting due to additional vaccines being required. This increases our cost to care for them, so their adoption fees are typically higher. However, compared to the cost of buying a puppy and paying to have it spayed/neutered and vaccinated, we feel that our adoption fees for all of our dogs are fair and reasonable.
All dogs are spayed or neutered, have received all age-appropriate vaccinations, are microchipped, & heartworm tested prior to being adopted, as well as on heartworm preventative in their foster home. Please note that puppies do not receive rabies shots or heartworm testing until usually around 6 months of age.
We receive many applications each day for our dogs, and if a dog we post on Facebook gets a lot of attention, we may be inundated with applications. We only have 2 people who process applications, and they work full time jobs in addition to volunteering with the rescue, so it takes us a good deal of time to review the applications. We must call the applicant's landlord and veterinarian (if applicable) to make sure that everything checks out, then our Director screens those applications and decides which applicants are contacted for home visits. Please also keep in mind that if the information you provided isn't accurate (phone number/email is wrong) or we can't get information from a landlord or vet, the process will take longer. In these situations we will contact you via email or phone to get the correct information, so please check your email.
We process eligible applications in the order they are received. The first good application we receive for a dog is the one that will be offered a meet & greet first. It is very important that the information you provide on your application is accurate and truthful, because if we cannot reach your vet or landlord to verify, we may move on to the next applicant.
Not unless we are having a public event. We are a foster home-based rescue, which means all of our adoptable dogs live in foster homes with families until they are adopted. We do not have a shelter or kennel like some rescues because we don't feel a shelter or kennel environment is the best environment for our dogs. This also means that in order to meet an adoptable dog, you must fill out an application and be approved to adopt before we can arrange a meet & greet. Once approved, one of our adoption team members will contact you to arrange a home visit and we will bring the dog to meet you and your family.
Our rescue is comprised solely of volunteers. No one, not our adoption team, our fosters, or our Director collect any sort of payment for the work they do with the rescue. This includes reimbursement for gas. Therefore, we cannot ask our adoption volunteers to drive more than 2 hours one way to perform home visits, and we require home visits for all of our dogs to make sure they are going to safe homes. If you live outside of our adoption radius, we encourage you to find a shelter or rescue closer to you. You can get a good list here.
